The English actually started Privateering but eventually the French were doing it too.
Before we started this France study I had read about Adoniram Judson and how he was captured by French Privateers on his way to England. He became a famous missionary to the Burmese. He translated the Bible into Burmese and his Burmese-English dictionary is still used today.
